Portman Square – Private, Value under 50K

south-east-corner-of-garden

Portman Square is a private garden square of approximately 1 hectare (2.47 acres) which was originally laid out c1780 and was completely re-landscaped in the early 1900’s, which resulted in the form we see today with informal winding paths between the entrance gates and across the central lawn. There are many notable mature London Planes grown over varied trees and shrubs. Many of the plane trees appear to date from 1780.

Railings and gates were erected in 1882-1886; but the railings were removed in 1942 as part of the war effort. They were restored in 1972. The original gates remain, with some fine examples of overthrow lanterns and in 1985 a tennis court was built.

A major rejuvenation of the Garden took place in 2005 & 2014 which has dramatically improved the beauty of the Garden even further including vastly improved plantings and lawn areas, upgraded hard surface paths, upgraded irrigation system, play area, tree works, lighting and enhancement planting. The Garden provides an exclusive and tranquil environment nestled among trees, sculpted garden island beds and green lawn. It is ideally suited for the hosting of outdoor private garden events with very good transport links, whilst also providing rare exclusiveness and privacy only minutes away from the hustle of busy Oxford Street within the heart of Central London’s busy West End.

The Portman Square Gardens site consists of fine turf amenity lawns, spring bulb meadows, mature specimen trees, garden beds, hedges, playground area, tennis court and event area for private use.

ENHANCING THE LANDSCAPE WHILST PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Gavin Jones grounds maintenance team have been carrying out landscape maintenance to the gardens for over the past five plus years for The Portman Estate. The on-site team of two, consisting of a dedicated Head Gardener and Assistant Gardener attend the gardens only two days a week to maintain and upkeep the gardens to high standards set out by the client. The dedicated team work closely with the Client and Landscape Architect to maintain the gardens with nature, biodiversity and sustainability very much at the heart of what we are trying achieve in this intimate private garden square.

With sustainability in mind examples include:

  • The construction of a number of log piles from on-site trees and insect habitats in the gardens
  • The installation of various bird boxes in the trees
  • Enhancement planting that encourages bees, butterflies and other insects to the gardens
  • Leaf Mould piles and recycling of green waste on-site, back into the gardens

“Attention to detail, which sets BALI members’ work apart, was clearly evident in all the winning schemes, as was a thirst for innovation to resolve to resolve complex challenges faced by designers and contractors. The international entries this year are mostly on a huge scale and demonstrate the transformative nature of landscape design and construction design and construction when employed with vision and ambition” – Greg Allen, BALI panel
